The brain is one of the most important things that we have to use in this life. Learning how to improve it's function may improve your ability on the job, open more opportunities for you, and improve your quality of living. The following four steps can help to improve your mental acuity.
The Mozart Effect
Listening to Mozart is said to improve brain function. The term "Mozart effect" refers to the effect that listening to Mozart has on the brain. Listening to classical music, playing the piano or other musical instrument, and singing have all been shown to improve brain function. If you do not like classical music, simply singing along with the radio while in the car can provide some musical stimulation for your brain and help to improve your brain function.
Physical Exercise to Improve Cognitive Function
Research shows that as little as 10 minutes of aerobic exercise improves cognitive function. Ways to incorporate more exercise in your daily routine can be as simple as walking up and down the stairs for a few minutes, or parking at the far end of the parking lot when shopping. Walking or other forms of exercise can provide the stimulation our brain needs to come up with an answer to a problem that has been eluding you.
Mental Exercise for Brain Growth
Mental exercises for your brain have been shown to generate neuron growth. This includes doing mental math, learning a language, and solving puzzles. Creative brain exercises such as cross word puzzles and Sudoku can be fun ways to keep your brain working. Learn a language by listening to a language tape in your car will turn your commute into a classroom. Come up with things that you enjoy doing that require you to use your brain actively, as opposed to passively sitting and watching television.
Effects of Stress on the Brain
Richard Restak, M.D., a Neuropsychiatrist from the George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Services, explains that "Stress causes brain damage." Given that stress can have such a negative impact on your mental health, learning to reduce stress in your life can be one of the most important things you can do to help improve your brain function.
Increasing your musical aptitude, daily physical exercise, mental exercises and reducing stress have all been shown to increase brain function and improve mental ability. Make the effort to learn from the research that has been done and improve your brain function.
